You need to repair your stair lift but don’t know who to call? Here’s everything you need to know about common stair lift repairs in Kansas City.

Common stair lift repairs

When something breaks or isn’t working on your stair lift, it’s often an easy fix. Because there aren’t many elements to a stair lift, it should be easy to identify the issues and determine if you need professional help.

There are three primary repairs you may experience with a stair lift.

1. Large stair lift components

Stairlift devices have several major components, including the motor (under the seat), gearbox, and static rail installed on the staircase.

A certified/licensed professional should repair the motor, gearbox, or static rail. Although you may be tempted to repair your stair lift yourself, we don’t recommend it.

The good news? Most stair lift warranties cover these larger elements. For example, Bruno, the stair lift units our team at Independent Home Solutions installs, provides a Limited Lifetime Warranty that covers the motor, static rail, and gearbox as long as the original purchaser still owns it!

What does that mean for you? As long as you’re the one who originally purchased/paid for the stairlift, Bruno will pay for the replacement part! Keep in mind that you’ll likely still have to pay for labor to repair or install the new gearbox, rail, or motor.

2. Smaller stair lift pieces (battery, seat, etc.)

Stairlift devices also have smaller components, which may include batteries, swivel seats, footrests, armrests, and an obstruction sensor. These smaller items are often not covered by manufacturer warranties, although some companies, like Bruno, offer a two-year warranty after purchase for all stairlift components.

If you’re in the two-year window, Bruno will issue replacement parts, but you will likely have to pay for labor to replace the part. Parts such as a swivel seat, batteries, armrests, or an obstruction sensor are less expensive than the larger components such as a motor.

3. Remote control or buttons

Minor repairs, such as issues with a remote control, switch, or button, may be easy to do yourself. If your remote control isn’t working, replace the batteries and try to reset it. You can buy a new remote relatively cheaply if that doesn’t work.

If you have other buttons or switches that aren’t working, you will likely need to call the stair lift company that installed the device to troubleshoot the issue. (They may have to replace the switch or button.)

Do warranties cover stair lift repairs?

Yes, most warranties cover certain parts of a stairlift device. While warranties don’t usually cover the labor for stairlift repairs, they cover the price for the parts that will be fixed.

We recommend contacting your stair lift company for an idea of pricing for repairs.

Why has my stairlift stopped working?

The most common reason your stair lift has stopped working is an issue with the motor, gearbox, remote control, or batteries. If you’re unsure how to

How do you fix a stairlift?

Before fixing your stairlift, you’ll have to identify the issue. Chances are you’ll be able to determine where the problems are coming from. If there’s an issue with a main component of your stair lift, call your stair lift company to service it.

You can try to fix it yourself if it’s a more minor part, such as the footrest, swivel seat, or other parts. However, ensure your safety isn’t compromised when repairing any part of your stair lift.

What stair lift repairs are covered by the Bruno warranty?

Bruno offers two different warranties: one for indoor and one for outdoor stair lift models.

The outdoor stair lift warranty includes a 30-day labor and workmanship guarantee, a two-year warranty for the whole device, and a five-year warranty for all major components, including the static rail, gearbox, and motor, when owned by the original buyer.

Indoor stair lifts also have a two-year warranty and a 30-day guarantee for the whole unit. They also come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty for major parts for the entire life of the unit when still owned by the original buyer.

Does every stair lift come with a free warranty?

Yes, most stair lifts come with free warranties. For example, AmeriGlide provides warranties for the original batteries for up to 30 days, all components for two years, and all larger elements like the motor, pinion gear, gear rack, and gearbox for five years.

Other stairlift manufacturers, like Bruno, provide more comprehensive warranties for their models. They offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty for the motor, static rail, and gearbox for the entire life of the stairlift when owned by the original buyer, a two-year warranty for the whole device, and a 30-day guarantee for installation and the device.

Why is my stairlift remote not working?

If you’ve replaced the batteries in your remote but it still isn’t working, we recommend purchasing a new remote. There may be a wire or screw loose inside the remote, but due to the low cost of a remote, it likely isn’t worth rooting around to fix unless you’re an electrical engineer.
