Utilizing All Of Your Home
For any house modification that requires a stair lift, we first need to understand your stairs—is it a straight shot? Curved? Half up and turn at a landing? We have both ready-to-go (modular-based) systems and the capability to custom-create a stair lift for your home. And whether you have carpet or wood, we can engineer a solution.
But even more important than the stairs is the rider. What needs do they have? What weight are we lifting? Do they have use of their hands? If it is a powered lift, we will connect it to your home’s existing electrical.
Tub to Walk-In Shower Conversion
The threshold of your shower should be the right fit for your needs, whether you need to walk in with assistance or roll in with a wheelchair. The typical install removes your existing bathtub and can replace it with a walk/roll-in shower with step-ins from 4″ to 0″. We are well known across KCMO for our speedy and professional walk-in shower installation!
In one to two days, we can remove your existing bathtub and install a brand new, accessible walk-in (or roll-in!) shower. We offer various interior options, including fixed or fold-down seats, that make it easy to feel comfortable in your new shower.

House Modifications FAQs
Why should I have a professional build my wheelchair ramp?
Professionally constructed wheelchair ramps are held to higher safety and quality standards than the DIY type. Your handyman neighbor, or maybe your supportive family, may offer to build a wooden ramp for a lesser price.
However, as kind as the offer may seem, for the safety of aging at home seniors, your ramp should be built following specific guidelines and standards, using materials that won’t degrade as the seasons go by. A well-designed and expertly built ramp minimizes the risk of accidents and injuries that could occur when navigating stairs or uneven terrain.
As professional designers and installers, our entire team is dedicated to ensuring your ramp’s slope, width, and railing all comply with state and federal safety regulations. Plus, IHS can make recommendations for systems that might work better than a ramp for your specific needs—including vertical lifts.
With our knowledge of options, and our design and construction expertise, you can reduce the chances of slips, trips, or falls both outside and inside the home.
Does a stairlift make my stairs harder for other people to use?
Our stairlift systems are designed to provide maximum mobility assistance without obstructing access to your stairs. We accomplish this by utilizing 3 smart design features:
Sleek Profile: Our chairlift track is slim and unobtrusive. We install it on the side of the staircase, allowing your chairlift to travel up and down using minimal space. You’ll still retain the majority of your staircase’s width so that family, friends, workers, and those young people moving your furniture will have plenty of room to go up and down the stairs. Plus your pets won’t have obstructions in their path, either!
Fold-Up Profile: The comfortable and sturdy seat, footrest, and armrests fold up and out with ease. This makes sure your stairs remain free of obstruction from your stairlift system.
No Need for Wall Support: Some older or less advanced stairlift systems need wall-mounted support to be stable. This creates issues for specialty stairways and/or freestanding staircases. Our stairlifts don’t require wall support. Instead, ours mount on the treads themselves, leaving walls and/or railings and sides unobstructed and undamaged.
Is a walk-in shower necessary when I have a shower stall already?
There’s a reason seniors who choose to age at home often install walk-in showers. Traditional shower stalls usually have raised lips or edges where you enter the stall. They also have swing-style or sliding doors which can require unaffected balance to open/close.
People who are mobility or balance challenged find navigating these hazards difficult, and they can contribute to making the bathroom one of the most dangerous rooms to navigate in the home—especially when surfaces are wet and/or slippery.
Your walk-in shower from Independent Home Solutions doesn’t have raised edges at the entry or a door to open or close. Instead it operates like a “shower room.” Entering and exiting is easier with the ultra-low threshold, semi-open or fully open design, and your choice of support bars and full tiling. They make a shower more spacious while still fitting in a small space, and look modern and stylish while doing it.
What exactly defines a “mobility issue?”
A Cornell University study defines ambulatory or mobility issues as a disability involving “serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs.” Unfortunately, 36% of U.S. adults 65 and older have mobility issues, with the percentage a little lower for the 65 to 74 group, then growing higher at 75 years of age, and worsening for adults 85 and older.
Ambulatory/mobility issues cause increasingly severe access issues as we age. Whether it’s navigating staircases, entry and exit points of the home, or addressing the slight level changes within the home itself, all of these can create trip/fall hazards.
Independent Home Solutions offers many years of experience helping seniors age in place safely and successfully with ramp installations, stairlift improvements, and bathroom support enhancements. Plus our estimates are free, so you have nothing to lose and freedom to gain!
